Riverland

Reflections, Red Gums, and Some of the Darkest Skies on Earth

The Riverland holds a special kind of stillness — where the mighty Murray winds its way through ancient red gum forests and wide, open skies stretch endlessly above. It’s a landscape carved by water and lit by stars, and one that continues to draw me back again and again.

From the internationally recognised River Murray Dark Sky Reserve — one of the best places on the planet to witness the night sky — to the glassy reflections of Lake Bonney at dusk, the Riverland offers a perfect blend of still water, glowing horizons, and skies teeming with stars.

In this gallery, you’ll find moments of quiet awe: star trails spinning above the river gums, the Milky Way mirrored in a perfectly still lake, and the deep blues of twilight fading into the brilliance of night. It’s a region where light and shadow play in harmony, and where the silence of the night is filled with wonder.

These are some of the clearest skies I’ve ever photographed under — and some of the most peaceful. The Riverland is where the landscape slows you down and the stars invite you to look up.
